Scaling Nature Based Solutions: Establishing NVQ Standards for Analog Forestry in Sri Lanka

The (National Competency Standards – NCS)) Programme to create a curriculum for Analog Forestry at NVQ Levels 5 and 6 was held at LOADI Grove on the 29th and 30th, with the support of the Lanka Organic Agriculture Movement and the MISEREOR project, in collaboration with NAITA and TVEC.

This programme brought together expertise, field experience, and institutional knowledge to design a scientifically sound and practical course that can work in diverse environmental and socio-economic settings, not only in Sri Lanka but globally.

We were honored to have Dr. Ranil Senanayake, who introduced Analog Forestry to the world via Earth Restoration, along with Mr. Dejan de Zoysa from the same institute.

Prof. W.K.D.D. Liyanage representing the Department of Forest Conservation, Dr. Kelum Silva representing the Rubber Research Institute, Thilak Kariyawasam, Ajantha Palihawadana, Fazly Mohamed, G.M. Dhanusha D. Jayatissa representing the Lanka Organic Agriculture Movement and Nimesh Chaturanga representing the Belipola Arboretum participated in this.

Analog Forestry is a powerful tool for Nature-Based Solutions, combining ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. This NVQ qualification trains professionals to manage environmental restoration, tackle challenges like land degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, and strengthen professional standards in this vital field.
By establishing nationally recognized competency standards, we are taking a major step toward long-term environmental sustainability and resilient landscape management in Sri Lanka.
