Program to Promote Organic Agriculture and Agroecology

A discussion and planning meeting to promote organic agriculture, agroecology and analog forestry in Sri Lanka was held on June 06, in conjunction with World Environment Day, with the partner organizations of the Lanka Organic Agricultural Movement at LOADI Grove, Mattegoda.

The discussion, which was held with 38 representatives of 20 partner organizations representing the Lanka Organic Agricultural Movement and 20 districts, discussed the problems faced by organizations working on Organic Agriculture and Agroecology and how to deal with them.

In particular, possible solutions to problems such as lack of funds for the programs of those organizations, the importance of working collectively for a common goal, climate change and the creation of a strong peasant group to face them were discussed there.

All the organizations also agreed to conduct a series of training programs for farmer groups of these stakeholder organizations under the leadership of the LOAM organization.

The meeting was held at the LOADI Grove Organic and Analog Forestry Training Center in Mattegoda and the capacity and facilities for conducting residential training programs for farmers were also observed.

The program, which was the first step in a long-term goal of building a sustainable farming community that practices eco-friendly farming throughout the island, was appreciated by all those who participated.
