Thai Pongal Day is more of a cultural festival than a religious one, it is a cultural festival where farmers offer blessings to the nature that helped them in their work, to the animals they worked with and to the sun and cattle. From the month of Nikini, the harvested crops are put into a new pot, boiled with sugar, milk and ghee, and then the ritual of offering Pongal rice to the sun and cows is performed there. On that occasion a Thai Pongal event organized by LOAM Sri Lanka was held on January 15 at Mattegoda LOAM Organic Agriculture / Agroecology Research and Training Center.
